The use of special materials handling cranes within a pallet racking system enables the aisle width to be reduced significantly, down to 1300mm in some cases. The height of the installation can also be increased to over 30 metres. These both have significant benefits in terms of space utilisation.

As the cranes run on rails, higher operating speeds are allowed, together with simultaneous vertical and horizontal movement . This means faster cycle times when loading or unloading the rack. Crane systems can be fully computer controlled and with the addition of conveyors and/or AGVs the whole warehouse can be fully automated.
